Our strategy

We intend to play a leading role in the worldwide resource revolution.  We will take on this role by pursuing two major policies: transforming our business by focusing on the circular economy and digital technology. Becoming the premier partner for cities and industries in the design and implementation of solutions that optimize the management of their resources.

Heading towards the circular economy

The linear model of extraction, production and consumption has come to an end. As a major player in the recycling and recovery of waste and a leader in the reuse of treated wastewater, we intend to speed up the development of our recovery activities, particularly the following:

  • Material recovery: SUEZ already returns 4.4 million tons of secondary raw materials (paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic, wood) to the market. Its goal is to strengthen this position, thanks to higher operational and innovative standards. To achieve it, we will need to improve the performance and the sophistication of our recovery techniques and targeting the flows for which recovery will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We’re committed to doubling the recycling of plastics by 2020 and strengthening our position in the dismantling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and for the end-of-life aircraft and vehicles.
  • Energy to energy: SUEZ expand the range of renewable energy (solar/ wind) by increasing the production of energy from waste and biowaste, including incineration, or the production of recovered solid fuels that can be used as new types of fuels.
  • The recovery of treated wastewater: We intend to consolidate our position as a leader in the reuse of treated wastewater for a multitude of purposes (industry, agriculture, artificial aquifer recharge), which will allow us to anticipate the possible conflicts between the different users of water resources. Other promising markets include, the recovery of heat from wastewater and the production of energy from sewage sludge.

Increasing the speed of smart solutions’ deployment

Digital technology is already at the heart of SUEZ’s operations. With its new digital roadmap, SUEZ is becoming a data-driven company, improving its operational performance while offering new services for its customers. This development priority, applicable to the smart management of water and waste, currently accounts for more than €350 million of our business. It also represents clear prospects for growth in the Group’s various markets.

Where we intend to speed up the development of our innovative line of Advanced Solutions as well as e-commerce platforms and market places. These smart solutions will shape the face of the city of the future, to be more resilient because of integrated management of its various flows.

Developing integrated solutions for industry

SUEZ intends to become the environmental benchmark for its industrial customers. We pursue ambitious sustainable development or CSR policies, complied with the climate commitments outlined by the COP21 agreement and we’re determined to move our economic models towards the circular economy.

Thus, creating a community of values and goals making SUEZ their natural partner to respond to a multitude of needs: the management of the raw materials and energy procurement, the reduction of water consumption, environmental standards, complex processes, operational performance, reputation and operating permissions.

Industrial customers now represent 40% of the SUEZ Group's revenue, thanks to iconic customers such as Sanofi, Safran, L'Oréal Solvay and Total. SUEZ’s offering targets seven markets (food production; construction, dismantling and materials; energy; the chemical and pharmaceutical industries; pulp and paper; oil and gas). The creation of a new Business Unit "Water Technologies & Solutions" (emerging from the acquisition of GE Water & Process Technologies) opens up great potential for commercial synergies.

Environmental transition on an international scale

Strengthened by the transformation of its businesses and its innovation policy, SUEZ brings the solutions for smart and sustainable resource management. We’re capable of supporting the environmental transition all over the planet and of responding to the yearning for a growth model that consumes fewer resources.

SUEZ has re-organized its international division into five geographical business units and four business lines in order to achieve continued growth.

We intend to consolidate and broaden our operations in countries where we’ve been established for a long time (the United States, Australia, China, Morocco, Chile) and to strengthen our position in countries or regions of high potential for growth i.e. India, Middle East, Mexico, etc. There are also plans to selectively pursue development in new zones like sub-Saharan Africa or South-East Asia through major projects or long-term facilities.

SUEZ is aiming for sustained international growth of between 6% and 8% that will enable it to reconcile “development” and “performance”.
