The SMPRB and SUEZ officially launch the modernisation work of the DEWEN energy-from-waste plant in Taden (Brittany, France).

Starting in June 2027, the plant will process up to 150,000 tonnes of non-recyclable household waste per year originating from municipalities in the SMPRB area and neighbouring regions, compared to the current 106,500 tonnes. Following the modernisation and extension work, the Taden plant will prioritise the transformation of household waste and non-recyclable waste from the municipalities within the SMPRB area. As part of public-public cooperation, the plant will also accept household waste volumes from neighbouring areas. The modernisation of the plant contributes to a dual objective of the Regional Waste Prevention and Management Plan for Brittany: reducing landfilled waste in Brittany and promoting the pooling of treatment facilities between territories.

The project to renovate, modernise and expand the plant is part of a 20-year public service concession contract awarded on 1 January 2024 to DEWEN, a subsidiary of SUEZ. The work will extend until the end of the first half of 2027 and includes the modernisation of a waste treatment line with a capacity of 7.5 tonnes per hour and the construction of a new treatment line to recover 12.5 tonnes of waste per hour, resulting in a total of 20 tonnes per hour.

The modernisation of the plant will improve the site's performance while limiting its environmental impacts. The project includes the installation of a dry flue gas treatment process, which will reduce the use of municipal water by 96% contributing to more sustainable resource management. In line with enhanced environmental performance, an effluent recycling system will also be integrated into the process.

Additionally, the work will increase and diversify the site's energy recovery capacity: the plant will produce up to 99 GWh of electricity per year. In a second phase, the project also plans to supply heat generated from the territory's waste.

Finally, a visitor circuit will be set up to raise public awareness about the importance of waste reduction, sorting, and recovery. It will include a biodiversity trail as well as educational tools to inform and engage citizens.

Aligned with SUEZ's social commitments, the project includes an integration program designed to foster local employment and support the social and solidarity economy. As part of this initiative, one apprentice will join the workforce. Additionally, the cleaning of the premises will be entrusted to Alter Intérim, a temporary employment agency specialised in integration based in Dinan (a minimum of 780 hours per year), and the maintenance of green spaces will be carried out by the local organisation STEREDENN (a minimum of 840 hours per year). Finally, SUEZ and its construction partner, Groupe Legendre, have committed to allocate a minimum of 5,000 hours of work to individuals eligible under social inclusion clauses during the design and construction phases. A total of 27 employees work daily to ensure the operation of the energy-from-waste plant.
