Social innovation involves developing and implementing effective solutions to address social or environmental issues through active collaboration between stakeholders from different sectors (businesses, local authorities, and non-profit organisations).

Through inclusive recruitment, partnerships with actors in the social and solidarity economy, and the commitment of our staff, we have developed pioneering expertise in social innovation to enhance its impact and offer circular and inclusive solutions. We also support citizens and customers in the environmental transition, helping them to manage their water consumption and waste production, and by developing innovative, performance-based waste management models designed to reduce waste.

Our vision of social and circular innovation

To contribute to the development of the circular economy and ensure our actions are effective, we believe our offerings must be inclusive, form part of a regional cooperation approach, and combine technology with other types of innovation (partnership-based, contractual, social, process-related, etc.).

A successful ecological transition must be inclusive

In a country where inequalities are already significant, involving the most vulnerable helps to strengthen public support for transition measures by demonstrating that they take everyone’s reality into account. Social issues cannot therefore be separated from environmental performance and must be taken into account in our services and operating procedures.

The circular economy is a collective endeavour

To develop the circular economy, we must mobilise coalitions of stakeholders: local authorities, businesses, associations, citizens… Everyone has a role to play, everyone is part of the solution, and it is by working together that we can build a more effective, faster and fairer transition.

The circular economy is not just about better recycling

The circular economy involves reducing, reusing and rethinking our production and consumption patterns. It is the interaction between different forms of innovation that enables us to transform production and consumption models in depth – a necessary condition for the success of the circular economy.

We have a role to play in addressing social and environmental challenges. We can use our business lines as levers for impact to offer circular and inclusive solutions aligned with the ecological and solidarity-based transition.

Our approach is structured around three key areas

Accelerating a just ecological transition

by establishing effective operational cooperation between us and an ecosystem of stakeholders committed to the circular economy and access to essential services.

Acting for inclusion

by organising the recruitment of people who are distant from the labour market into sectors facing labour shortages and by subcontracting to social and solidarity economy (SSE) enterprises within the value chain.

Extending our impact beyond business

through an ambitious skills-based sponsorship scheme that puts our employees’ talents at the service of charities, and by supporting the development of our public interest entities (SUEZ Foundation, Aquassistance, etc.).

We are recognised as a pioneer in social innovation in France

We were honoured at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2023 and 2024 for our approach to social innovation. We signed the RISE AHEAD Pledge alongside a dozen pioneering organisations to strengthen investment in social innovation.
We are an active member of the Business Collective for a More Inclusive Economy and co-chair the working group dedicated to vulnerable customers and employees.
We are involved in the PAQTE and “Les entreprises s’engagent” programmes across 23 regions, with a focus on employment and mentoring for refugees. We have joined the Tent coalition (2021) and the Refugees Are Talent collective (2022).
Our inclusive HR policy has been recognised with two awards: the IMPACT Award at the HR Digital Awards and the ETHICAL HR Director Award at the Victoires du Capital Humain.

Accelerating a just ecological transition across regions

By establishing effective operational cooperation between us and an ecosystem of stakeholders

committed to the circular economy, our approach combines three actions:

Collectively designing solutions that contribute to the development of a just transition

Our social innovation team has developed a method and tools to strengthen the social and circular impact of our offerings, always guided by the same principle: mobilising and integrating complementary local stakeholders to better meet our clients’ expectations and go further in terms of the circular economy and inclusion.

We seek to develop long-term, trust-based partnerships, where mutual understanding is a key factor for success.

Coalition of social economy stakeholders on the Montauban performance contract – In 2024, 12 services were delivered with 5 social economy partners, generating over 52,400 hours of work integration for 117 people. A platform for sorting oversize waste was created to maximise reuse and recycling, operated by four employees with disabilities. A bicycle-based collection service for oversize waste and cardboard was rolled out in La Rochelle and Marseille, following an initial launch in Lyon. These initiatives reinforce our commitment to the circular economy and inclusion.

Cycle logistics – Launch of a bicycle-based collection service for oversize waste and cardboard in the city centres of La Rochelle, Marseille and Lyon in partnership with Tout En Vélo.

Solidarity Plumbing - In 2024, our Social Innovation team coordinated three Solidarity Plumbing initiatives in France. In Nanterre, more than 580 inhabitants were made aware of the scheme, 61 free assessments were carried out and 30 households benefited from plumbing repairs. In Brive, 105 people were made aware of the issue, 89 assessments were carried out, and over 230 water-saving devices were installed. These concrete actions illustrate our commitment to an accessible and inclusive green transition.

Growing solutions by supporting social and circular entrepreneurs

Recognising that developing the circular economy requires support for entrepreneurs in the sector, we have been committed for several years to supporting social entrepreneurs in the circular economy across various regions.

We co-run acceleration programmes and a partnership

Two general programmes

aimed at accelerating the development of social economy enterprises working towards the circular economy in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Île-de-France:

Les Boucles, run in partnership with Ronalpia and the Lyon Metropolitan Area, has supported the growth of 39 businesses (10 in 2024) over the past three years, including notable successes such as TIZU, Boomerang and Ouicompost.

La Saison Circulaire, an acceleration programme for entrepreneurs in the circular and social economy in the Île-de-France region, run in partnership with PULSE (SOS Group), in which we supported 23 entrepreneurs in 2024: From the bloc, Revisité, Hedj...

The Circular and Sustainable Building Accelerator (ABCD)
Co-developed in 2022 with Les Canaux and Valdelia ahead of the REP PMCB (new regulations aimed at developing the circular economy in the construction sector). Following a successful first season in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, ABCD was launched in the Île-de-France region in September 2024.
28 projects are being supported, including 15 in Île-de-France. With 1,908 tonnes of materials reused or recycled in 2024 and 369 full-time equivalents, the Parisian branch of ABCD is already having a significant social and environmental impact.

A partnership with Unitec

We are involved in providing more targeted support to a number of circular economy start-ups through the Transition Programme set up in 2024 by Unitec in Bordeaux, in partnership with other major groups.

Working towards inclusion

We organise the recruitment of people who are distant from the labour market into sectors facing labour shortages and prioritise subcontracting to social and solidarity economy enterprises within our value chain.

Inclusive recruitment

Through our recruitment needs, we have a major lever for action in favour of inclusion. Our social innovation team supports our HR teams to encourage the recruitment of people who are distant from the labour market or under-represented in the Group’s business lines. We are therefore rolling out a diverse range of initiatives to reach people who are distant from the labour market: in 2024, 1,758 people distant from the labour market took part in 106 initiatives coordinated by the Social Innovation Department. We are also working to promote inclusive work-study schemes by engaging our network of employment and integration stakeholders and by specifically targeting people from priority neighbourhoods: in 2024, we exceeded our target of integrating 10% of work-study students from priority neighbourhoods in France.

Project Lotus: creating training and recruitment cohorts for shortage occupations
In 2024, we created two cohorts of refugees training as HGV Mechanics and Industrial Maintenance Technicians in waste management, and one cohort of Pipe Fitters in the water sector.

Rebond Insertion, a service offering that is 100% SUEZ and 100% inclusive

Rebond Insertion offers environmental services and temporary staffing solutions by employing people on integration schemes. It acts as a springboard to the mainstream labour market: in 2024, 70.2% of its employees on integration schemes moved into employment-training schemes (positive outcomes).

Extending our impact beyond our business activities

Our impact extends beyond business through an ambitious skills-based sponsorship programme that enables our employees to put their skills to work for charitable organisations. We also facilitate the coordination of our public interest entities (SUEZ Foundation, Aquassistance, TIS Foundation, Water for All Chair, etc.) in their development.

Encouraging our employees’ involvement in local charities
We facilitate our employees’ involvement in local community organisations. Since 2023, we have adopted a “Solidarity Engagement Charter” which enables all our employees in France to commit up to two days (solidarity time credit) or, at the end of their career (through skills-based volunteering for up to one year), to carry out assignments for local charities.

To this end, we have set up a solidarity engagement platform:
