SUEZ and RATP Group join forces to accelerate the shift towards sustainable urban mobility through a power purchase agreement

SUEZ and RATP Group announce the signing of a long-term renewable energy purchase agreement – (PPA). Under this agreement, SUEZ will supply RATP Group — the world's third-largest urban transport operator — with almost 100 GWh of renewable electricity per year, generated from the recovery of household waste. The contract will last for a maximum of 16 years.
This new long-term renewable energy purchase agreement aligns with the energy and climate policy of RATP and its subsidiaries, which are committed to enhancing the energy and carbon efficiency of their activities. A significant milestone in the energy performance strategy was reached in 2017 when RATP became the first multimodal operator to be certified ISO 50001 for energy management across all the activities. Since then, the certification has been successfully renewed.

RATP also aims to reduce by 43% its energy-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2027, compared to 2019 levels. This commitment has been validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative and confirms that RATP's climate objectives align with the Paris Agreement's most ambitious target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

Also, this Power Purchase Agreement with RATP is part of SUEZ's strategic plan to support companies in their energy transition. Starting in 2026, SUEZ will supply renewable energy produced by its waste-to-energy plants in France, several of which are located in the Île-de-France region. This energy will power the various activities of RATP Group and its subsidiaries (operation, maintenance, energy supply to stations and terminals, etc.) and reduce their carbon footprint.

As France's leader with 34 waste-to-energy plants recovering more than 3.5 million tons of waste per year to produce local energy, SUEZ implements technologies on sites to optimize energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint, while supplying its partners with recovered energy. This third PPA emphasizes SUEZ's commitment to accelerating the production and supply of energy recovery.
Having signed an initial long-term solar energy supply contract in 2022 and benefited from existing wind and hydroelectric power plants since 2021, the RATP Group is taking another step forward in its energy transition by partnering with SUEZ. This collaboration will help the Group achieve its goal of increasing the proportion of renewable energy in its annual electricity consumption to 15% by 2030. By integrating a new form of renewable energy production into its energy mix, RATP Group is demonstrating its commitment to accelerating its energy transition, optimizing its consumption, and increasing its use of renewable energy across its activities.”, said Jean-Yves Leclercq, Director of Strategy, Finance and Sustainable Performance of RATP Group.
