Established by the United Nations General Assembly, World Water Day has been marked since 1993. Organised on 22 March each year, this event highlights a specific theme relating to water resources.

Across the entire world, wastewater management is severely neglected, despite the growing quantity of wastewater. Of the 165 billion m³ of wastewater collected and treated every year, only 2% is reused.
However, the potential of this wastewater is significantly underestimated. It can be used as:

Once treated at water treatment plants, wastewater can be discharged into the environment or re-used (watering, irrigation or industrial processes). By reducing the volume of sludge produced in this water, it can also be re-used in the form of energy (biogas) or in agriculture.

Wastewater treatment: a social responsibility
2.5 billion people still do not have access to safe sanitation facilities. Every year, 280,000 people die due to problems with unsuitable facilities.
