Our 2017-2021 road map
Four priorities and 17 commitments for global performance
It contributes to shaping a sustainable environment now. It fulfils two other functions:
- To drive and manage transformation. It is made up of 17 time-limited, quantified commitments as well as action plans to fulfil these commitments by 2021,
- To help achieve the sustainable development goals defined by the UN in 2015.
As with the 2012-2016 road map, these new commitments will be accompanied by indicators of results and progress. They will be published annually in the company’s integrated report, along with a verification by an independent third party. They will also provide the opportunity for annual dialogue with a panel of internal and external stakeholders, who will challenge and, if necessary, adjust how the action plans are implemented.
Being a collaborative, open and responsible company
By promoting diversity and well-being in the workplace SUEZ must mirror the companies and the places in which we operate. We’re committed to promoting equal opportunities by pursuing the Diversity Program initiated in 2012.
Diversity is an essential component of well-being of our company; it allows each employee to play a decisive role in the business transformation linked to the Resource Revolution through dedicated training courses. Employee well-being, needs to be measured: SUEZ is committed to pursuing its now homogeneous system of internal investigations and to implementing the necessary progress plans.
Objectives and indicators for 2021
- Training more than 80% of the group’s employees every year
- Achieving a level of 33% of management positions filled by women companywide
- Increasing the coverage and the rate of employee participation in commitment surveys
- Indicators: coverage rate of 100% (aggregate over the last three years) and 60% participation rate
Increasing safety of the men and women working for SUEZ remains imperative: this shouldn’t be taken for granted. Targets in this area are amongst the most ambitious in the industry, with the objective of zero fatal accidents in liability, regardless of the person's status.
Our ambition is to reduce the frequency rates still further, in the water and waste sectors, wherever Suez is present amongst our employees as well as our subcontractors. Safety results are essential elements in assessing the performance of our managers.
Objectives and indicators for 2021
- 100% of restricted access zones equipped with suitable signage systems
- Reducing the frequency rate for all activities
Indicators: accident rate for water below 5; accident rate for waste below 13; accident rate for subcontractors

Indicator: increase the number of structures with shared governance or control (industrial framework agreements, mixed ownership companies, joint ventures)
Our responsibility lies in an increasingly globalized world requiring both precautionary measures, such as the security of personal data of employees and customers, but also the promotion of our wholesome values and convictions.
Social rights are fundamental to human rights: wherever SUEZ is present, we commit all our subsidiaries to securing and strengthening mechanisms of social dialogue. With regards to our supply chain, we’re implementing a vigilant plan to deliver respect for human rights and taking steps to further promote CSR in our relations with our suppliers.

Becoming the leader of the circular and low-carbon economy
We subscribe to the 2 degree trajectory by raising the ambitions of our previous roadmap.
We’re determined to limiting the carbon footprint of our business activities in all the countries where we operate with absolute GHG emission reduction targets: equipping all storage sites with biogas recovery systems, reinforcing the clean vehicle policy and increasing the energy performance of its business activities will contribute to reaching this goal.
We are also committed to helping our industrial customers and local authorities avoid the emission of GHGs through dedicated circular economy solutions (material and energy recovery), while doubling the recycling of plastic, a major economic and environmental issue for everyone.
Objectives and indicators for 2021
- Reduce direct and indirect GHG emissions by 10% by 2021 (30% by 2030)
- Help our customers to avoid more than 60 MtC02e of GHG by 2021
- Double the volume of recycled plastics
- Increase the production of renewable energy by more than 10%
By 2035, 40% of the world's population will live in water-stressed areas, if we do not act to secure water resources.
We want to both save water through improved leak and consumption management, but also maximizing supply by increasing available volumes of alternative sources of water (wastewater reuse, desalination).
We offer solutions to industry aiming to limit the water footprint and work to raise awareness of the consequences of climate change on water, within the Business Alliance for Water and Climate. Prevention is as important as adaptation: so we’re developing predictive tools for flood risk prevention for communities of all sizes.
Objectives and indicators for 2021
- Systematically offer our customers resilience plans for the effects of climate change
- Promoting different usages of water by tripling our alternative water supplies by 2030
Indicator: increase the capacity for the reuse of treated wastewater and desalination by one third by 2021 - Saving the equivalent of the water consumption of a city of more than 2 million inhabitants
Indicator: 2 million PE (on aggregate) of water savings in the drinking water distribution network
We have engaged all our employees in the Resource Revolution. Everything we do is a reflection of this strategy.
The circular economy makes it possible to decouple growth from the consumption of natural resources while reducing GHG emissions. We’re s renewing our objective of increasing the proportion of waste transformed into a secondary raw material, and applying it worldwide.
Objectives and indicators for 2021
- Increasing the production of secondary raw materials by 20%
Indicators: increase by 20% the quantity of secondary raw materials produced; twice as many tons of recovered waste as tons of waste disposed of
The fight against climate change, as well as large-scale deployment of the circular economy, requires the creation of a new economic model that takes structural account of external environmental and social factors.
We are developing this model by adopting an internal carbon price; by systematizing the proposal for remuneration based on global performance; by working on indicators for the circularity of materials for a more robust measurement of the impacts of the new model; by promoting the revolution of thought through implementation of a circular economy.
Objectives and indicators for 2021
- Introducing a directive carbon price in 60% of the annual expenditure committed to new projects
Indicator: 60% of the revenue committed to the operational committee with a reference carbon price - Introducing a harmonized global circularity indicator for goods and services
- Systematically offer pay packages partially index-linked to our global performance
- Raising employee awareness and promote training in emerging models (carbon accounting, new business models etc.)
Indicator: increase the coverage rate for awareness-raising tools
Support with concrete solutions the environmental transition of our clients
The solutions proposed by us in terms of the circular economy and treatment of water resources reflect the expectations of our industrial customers and local communities regarding economic and environmental performance.
