SUEZ follows a thorough process to remediate a site, consisting of several key steps that are codified and defined in the standard LNE NF X 31-620-1-2-3-4:

  • Diagnostic: Definition of needs, preliminary audit of risks, the scope of the project and the required human and technical resources, up to the definition of an accident prevention plan.
  • Rehabilitation engineering: Assistance for the contracting authority, analysis of the design, the technical and financial feasibility, laboratory tests and field tests to guarantee the most suitable treatment solution and confirm our commitment to achieve a result.

Laboratory and field tests: helping to design and size the operations

Methodological developments and increasingly complex problems (remediation targets, geology of the environments, complex pollutants, etc.) mean that laboratory and/or field tests have now become an essential phase in certain remediation operations.

The experts in SUEZ’s internal laboratory have developed numerous tests to verify the effectiveness of remediation solutions in advance.

We are capable of testing most remediation techniques and have all the equipment required to perform chemical or geotechnical analyses in the laboratory. We also use numerous field tests to try out the most appropriate techniques directly on site and to assess their performance.

Laboratory and field tests provide valuable decision support for the choices of the technical and economical optimisation of a treatment solution.

Fully control site deconstruction and transformation 

Our teams perform a variety of general operations to prepare the site to be treated in order to guarantee the success of our remediation missions:

  • Dismantling of industrial buildings: we can organise the complete dismantling of your buildings as part of our remediation operations.
  • Dismantling of overhead and underground infrastructures: we can remove your facilities from the site to prepare to remediate the land and dismantle different types of infrastructures, from overhead and underground tanks, to canopies and ductwork, while taking all the necessary precautionary measures:
    • Cleaning and degassing of tanks and piping by hydrojet
    • Extraction (mechanical excavators or lifting equipment)
    • Loading and transportation of tanks on flat-bed trucks
    • Monitoring of disposal (recovery in metal recycling centres)

Remediation of industrial wasteland

Our expertise also covers the remediation of urban industrial wasteland for property development projects. We can manage complete projects to redevelop abandoned industrial sites or industrial sites to be re-qualified, from the risk audit and assessment, to the remediation of the sites and their redevelopment.

Create the conditions for a second life

Our remediation solutions can be used on the site where the soil is located, or off-site. From the treatment of soil polluted by hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, metals, etc., to the control of pyrotechnical pollution, our experts can remediate polluted sites and land to offer them a second lease of life.

Made-to-measure remediation

We offer various treatment solutions for pollution that depend on the deadlines or the configuration of the site:

  • In situ remediation, without excavating the soil
    • Conventional treatments, such as venting, bioventing, sparging, etc.
    • Simultaneous treatment of the soil, groundwater and floating materials (specific patented E.T.P.® process)
    • Treatment of chlorinated pollution (Oxidis® in situ oxidation or Bionappe® anaerobic biodegradation)
  • Off-site remediation (soil excavation):
    • The polluted soil is sent to certified centres (biocentres, sites that treat inert, non-hazardous and hazardous waste)
    • Total traceability of the soil sent off site using waste tracking documents

Our expertise covers both civilian and military sites. It is built on more than 25 years of experience and the skills of our engineers in geophysics, pyrotechnical remediation and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD):

We collaborate with design offices in the study of a site’s history. This study can confirm that your site is polluted by explosive substances or has been the scene of acts of war (combat, bombardment).

Recovery of soils after remediation

Site remediation involves tracking the waste in real time, managing hazardous waste and recycling waste that can be recovered as new materials.

After reception and inspection of the polluted soil, it is trated, sorted and sent for either recovery or disposal. The NEOTER® platform can be used for different types of treatments and pretreatments, including screening, crushing, washing, biotreatment or dewatering.

These platforms comply with the current regulations (sites classified for environmental protection, authorisations, development applications, etc.).

Reducing CO2 emissions: developing cleaner means of transport

Depending on the situation, we encourage the use of alternative means of transport to roads, such as waterways, especially for the transportation of polluted earth to the treatment centres to reduce CO2 emissions and optimise your logistics. The advantages of the alternative means of transport are :

  • Optimisation of your logistics (one 4,400 t barge convoy replaces 220 20 t trucks on the roads).
  • Reduced CO2 emissions: Transport on waterways is one of the solutions that produces the least atmospheric emissions. Most of our NEOTER® platforms can be accessed by waterway.
  • A monitoring system covering the entire logistics chain
  • Reduction of the risks of an accident

We guarantee that the transportation of the soil is tracked from end to end, using waste tracking documents.

Remediation of a complex site within an urban area in a tented enclosure

A site of the pharmaceutical industry of the 1950s undergoing conversion requires a site remediation heavily impacted by hydrocarbons, chlorinated compounds and metals. Two 9,000 m2 containment tents were constructed to limit olfactory nuisances to the maximum and for soils pre-treatments. Next, the coatings of old industrial infrastructure (35,000 m2 of concrete) and underground networks (gas, water, process) will be demolished and 80,000 m3 of polluted soil has been excavated and directed to processing systems, particularly on a Neoter platform to optimize soil recovery.

Thermal desorption unit for Al Karaana lagoon project (Qatar) - SUEZ

The remediation of the Al Karaana Lagoons in Qatar comprises the reclamation and rehabilitation of 400 hectares of lagoons with the objective of preserving and enhancing the region’s environmental status. The remediation works will consist of the excavation of 2,000,000 m3 of sludge and the most heavily contaminated soil and sludge has to be treated by a thermal desorption process designed and operated by SUEZ.
