Pedal For Purpose SUEZ in India Celebrates Week of Sustainability Through Collective Action
Every year, the first week of June brings together some of the world’s most significant environmental observances: World Environment Day (June 5), World Ocean Day (June 8), and World Bicycle Day (June 3). At SUEZ in India, we mark it as the Week of Sustainability. This year, we made it deeply purposeful and wholly our own, with the launch of a nation-wide employee initiative called Pedal for Purpose.
The timing was fitting. 2026 also marks the 10th anniversary of SUEZ Foundation India, a milestone that called for more than celebration. It called for action.
Pedalling with Purpose Across 10 Sites
Over the course of the week, starting June 1, colleagues from 10 SUEZ sites across India (Gurgaon, Delhi, Lucknow, Kochi, Coimbatore, Mumbai, Shimla, Kolkata, Mangaluru, and Davanagere) came together for a 10 km cycling and community clean-up challenge. Teams cycled through their project sites and local neighbourhoods, collecting litter, segregating waste responsibly, and documenting the journey as they went.
The choice of cycling was deliberate. On World Bicycle Day, it served as both a symbol and a statement, of reduced dependence on fossil fuels, of healthier communities, and of what it means to be climate-conscious in everyday choices.
Beyond the Ride, Creating Impact
Each participating site maintained a live tracker capturing the intensity and scale of participation, kilometres pedalled, areas covered, and waste collected, building a real-time picture of collective impact. The campaign captured the true spirit of our teams, united by a common commitment: riding for a cause.
For every verified 10 km completed by a site, SUEZ Foundation India committed to contributing INR10,000 towards a social cause chosen by colleagues themselves. They could direct their collective effort towards causes they care about, from environmental awareness initiatives and women empowerment to child education and healthcare for marginalised communities, among others. In total, the campaign aimed to channel INR1 lakh towards grassroots impact across the country.
Together For a Greener Tomorrow
The initiative also provided colleagues with an opportunity to visit a local NGO, where they engaged with students and teachers in discussions on environmental conservation and the vital role of youth in building a greener future. They also participated in a tree plantation activity that was as much about human connection as it was about environmental action. Together, they planted saplings, each one a small but lasting symbol of shared responsibility for the world we inhabit.
The plantation drive embodied the spirit of World Environment Day's 2026 theme: Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future. It was a reminder that sustainability, at its most meaningful, is not just about systems and solutions, it is about people.
Collecting Plastic Waste for Clean Oceans
World Ocean Day, observed on June 8, brought its own call to action. Across all 10 SUEZ in India sites, colleagues participated in a dedicated waste collection drive, focused specifically on preventing plastic waste from finding its way into drains, rivers, and eventually, the ocean.
The drive was a clear expression of a simple but urgent truth: the health of our oceans begins on land. Every piece of plastic collected at a site is one less fragment drifting towards a coastline.
Sustainability as a Way of Life
What made the Week of Sustainability 2026 remarkable was not any single event, but the idea running through all of them: that sustainability is not a department or a report, it is a way of showing up. Pedalling through a neighbourhood. Preventing one more plastic bottle from reaching the sea. Sitting with someone from a different walk of life and planting something together.
For SUEZ in India, this week was a reaffirmation. Ten years of SUEZ Foundation India. Ten sites. Ten kilometres. And a commitment that goes far beyond numbers: to healthier communities, cleaner environments, and a future worth working for.
