Recovering used coffee capsules to strengthen the circular economy

Nespresso, a pioneer in individual coffee capsules, has been committed for many years to a responsible management approach for the resources required for its activity.

Building on its experience in recycling used coffee capsules in France, Nespresso called upon SUEZ, a waste recovery expert, to improve the end-of-life management of its coffee doses used on the Moroccan market.

Giving a second life to used coffee capsules

Concerned with reducing the environmental impact of its activities, Nespresso launched a recycling action for coffee capsules used by its customers in Morocco.
All collected capsules are transported to a SUEZ treatment center, where aluminium and coffee grounds are separated to give them a second life.

Simplifying collection to encourage recycling

Recovering waste to produce high-quality secondary raw materials

The bags of collected used coffee capsules are transported to the SUEZ recycling and recovery platform located in Bouskoura. The coffee grounds and aluminium they are made of are separated there for recovery:

  • The organic matter from the coffee grounds is handed over to the "Terre et Humanisme" association, which works to promote agroecology and the recovery of local resources. The coffee grounds are transformed into compost and fertilizer, which are then used to enrich the soil.
  • Aluminium is reinjected into the economy through specialized recovery channels.
