Transforming wasterwater into a resource

Facing the city's rapid expansion and increasing health, safety, and environmental protection requirements, we support local authorities in their ambition to transform wastewater into a resource. A key focus of the project is sludge treatment and recovery, aimed at reducing environmental impacts while producing renewable energy

A renewed commitment to Egypt

In 2025, following a public tender launched by the Construction Authority for Potable Water & Wastewater (CAPW), SUEZ and Arab Contractors secured a four-year contract renewal for the plant's operation and maintenance.

Every day, more than 150 qualified engineers and technicians ensure the optimal operation of this strategic facility, strengthening the city's long-term water resilience.

The site now produces 5 MWh of electricity per day from biogas, covering 65% of the plant's energy needs a significant step toward energy autonomy and carbon footprint reduction.

Recognized expertise in sludge recovery

In 2022, the Group completed the construction of four anaerobic digesters, each with a capacity of 16,000 m³, enabling on-site sludge recovery. This advanced digestion process helps reduce waste volumes, produce renewable energy, and enhance both the environmental and economic performance of the plant.

Capacity, performance and sustainability

In 2015, the plant treated an average of 675,000 m³/day, while peak flows have recently reached 1,120,000 m³/day due to population growth and the effects of climate change. In 2022, sludge production, estimated at between 900 and 1,000 tons/day, is now managed through an optimized process chain designed and commissioned by SUEZ experts.

Beyond its technical performance, the facility generates multiple environmental and social benefits: improved water quality, support for agriculture, protection of local biodiversity, and a sustainable improvement in the quality of life for Alexandria’s residents.

Securing Alexandria's sustainable future

Through cutting-edge technologies, recognized operational expertise, and a resource-recovery mindset, SUEZ is helping to place the Alexandria East plant at the heart of a sustainable water future for the city.
