Waste analysis

We offer a wide range of waste testing services to allow our customers to meet the challenges of sustainable waste management. We have a dedicated waste analysis laboratory for characterising waste streams in addition to carrying out testing for the energy-from-waste industry and helping our customers divert waste away from landfill. However, where landfilling is required our aim is to help prevent, or reduce as far as possible the negative environmental impacts of landfill by offering testing in line with waste acceptance criteria. *This service is now provided by Normec
Energy-from-waste

Laboratory testing for the energy from waste sector

Energy from Waste (EfW) is a significant element of sustainable waste management in the UK. The need to increase new sources of energy production in the UK, and to reduce the carbon impact of this energy supply, provides the EfW sector with an opportunity for continued growth. However, with pressures to increase recycling rates, the feedstock available to EfW plants can sometimes be a technical challenge.

We offer a tool for the EfW sector in the form of laboratory testing and the ability of the laboratory to characterise the properties of feedstocks to ensure maximum potential is realised. Laboratory analysis can also detect potential issues with feedstocks before they cause any costly damage or regulatory conditions are breached.

Our range of testing includes:

  • Gross and Net Calorific Value
  • Moisture content
  • Ash content
  • Volatile matter
  • Elemental Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen Oxygen, and Sulphur
  • Metals analysis
  • Halides (Chlorine, Fluorine, Bromine, and total halides)
  • Bulk density
  • Particle Size Distribution
  • Compositional analysis (percentage paper, metals plastics etc.)
  • Biomass content
  • Ash melting properties
Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste and WAC testing

If the waste has been characterised as hazardous it must be treated and tested to meet either the Hazardous WAC levels or the Stable Nonreactive hazardous WAC levels so that it may go to the appropriate landfill.

WAC testing

There are 4 main WAC suites, the Full Suite, Inert Suite, Stable Nonreactive Hazardous Suite and the Hazardous Suite. The Full Suite as the name suggests covers the testing required for the other 3 suites. These suites are carried out at our lab in accordance with BS EN 12457.

Testing includes:

  • Loss on Ignition
  • BTEX
  • PCBs (7 Congeners)
  • TPH (C10-C40)
  • PAHs
  • pH
  • ANC (pH4)
  • ANC (pH7)
  • Metals
