The challenge

Epernay Agglomération was looking to improve operational efficiency, reduce water losses, and enhance the customer experience. Traditional meter reading processes limited visibility of consumption patterns, making it difficult to quickly identify leaks and instances of overconsumption. This resulted in avoidable water losses, billing disputes, corrective actions, and costly interventions for both the authority and users.

The challenge was to gain real-time insight into water consumption while providing customers with greater transparency and control over their usage.

The solution

SUEZ deployed a smart metering solution that continuously monitors water consumption and automatically detects anomalies. Through proactive alerts and advanced data analysis, operational teams can identify leaks earlier, respond faster, and prioritise interventions where they generate the greatest value. At the same time, customers gain access to their consumption data and receive notifications of unusual usage, enabling them to act before high-water bills accumulate.

The results

The smart metering deployment has delivered measurable environmental, operational, and financial benefits. Most notably, the solution has helped save 120 million litres of water through faster leak detection and intervention. By identifying abnormal consumption before it escalates, the system has also helped avoid €300,000 in bill adjustments linked to overconsumption.
In addition, meter readings and billing have become more reliable, reducing disputes, corrections, and field interventions. Operational teams benefit from greater efficiency through proactive monitoring and targeted maintenance. For customers, access to consumption insights and anomaly alerts provides greater transparency and control over water usage. This strengthens trust in the public service while encouraging more responsible consumption behaviours and long-term water conservation.
