Jersey Water high performance trial with SUEZ smart metering
Jersey Water’s trial of SUEZ smart meters achieved 98.1% connectivity on the Wize network, automating meter readings and detecting leaks. With easy installation and effective placement, Jersey Water plans to expand smart metering and integrate data into a customer portal to boost water monitoring and sustainability.
Jersey Water has completed a trial using SUEZ’s smart metering system, achieving an impressive 98.1% connectivity on the Wize network. The trial aims to automate meter readings and help identify customer-side leaks, so customers can better monitor and reduce their water consumption.
SUEZ was one of three options being trialled, with the utility seeking a comprehensive and integrated solution that provided daily communications and granular consumption information. To optimise concentrator placement, radio mapping was employed to simulate potential locations suggested by Jersey Water. A site was selected based on its advantageous terrain and elevation, maximising communication range and efficiency. Following SUEZ’s guidance on optimal placement, Jersey Water installed meters within well-defined communication zones and configured the concentrator accordingly.
The trial delivered encouraging results: overall connectivity stands at 96.4%, even for meters located more than 2.5 km from the concentrators. Within the 2.5 km range, connectivity reaches an impressive 98.1%, reflecting the effectiveness of the single concentrator site and levels of performance that Jersey Water is seeking to achieve.
In addition to its high performance, the installation process is straightforward and efficient. This ease of installation helps minimise disruption and supports rapid deployment across the network.
Jersey Water uses ON’connect® metering for data collection and meter management, with longer-term plans to integrate the system into a customer portal. This will empower customers to access detailed water consumption data and analytics via the ON’connect™ coach platform.
Martin Skyba, Head of Water Network at Jersey Water commented:
« Smart metering gives Jersey Water and our customers a clearer understanding of how we use water, one of our most precious island resources. The SUEZ solution offers valuable insight into consumption at a granular level and provides timely notifications of potential leaks. While regular data collection presents challenges, this solution has performed very well. Having completed the trial, we’re now installing more smart meters around Jersey and will continue to evaluate performance with a view to rolling out to more customers and giving them greater insights on their water use. This successful trial highlights how smart metering technology can transform water consumption, supporting smarter usage and more sustainable resource stewardship. »
