Save fresh water resources and lower the environmental impact of the Delta Electricity power plant in Australia

Delta Electricity operates a wastewater recycling plant to produce fresh water used to provide cooling at the Vales Point power station. A way for the industrial site to economise resources and improve its environmental impact. In 2014, Delta Electricity signed a contract with SUEZ to optimize the treatment of effluent from the municipal sewerage treatment works, the contract has been renewed twice with the last extension being for two years in 2017.

The mission

Reduce the water and environmental footprint of the power plant

Australian power operator Delta Electricity requires high volumes of fresh water to run its Vales Point power plant. For this it uses a wastewater treatment unit. Fresh water is essential to electricity production, being used to supply pure steam and to cool condensate. 
 
Since 2008, the plant has used water treated by the Mannering Park wastewater plant located nearby in the demineralisation facility. 


To generate greater water savings and lower the environmental impact of the power plant, Delta Electricity signed a 2-year contract with SUEZ in 2014 which has been renewed twice with the last extension being for two more years in 2017.
 
The aim of the work was to extend and support the continued positive sustainable impact of the wastewater recycling plant, which has reduced the volume of fresh water used by the power plant by 230 million litres a year since its introduction in 2009.

Optimize the reuse of wastewater to reduce costs and preserve natural resources

SUEZ deployed a dual response to enhance the performance of the wastewater recycling plant:
  • operational management,
  • maintenance management.

The action plan generated several benefits for Delta Electricity.
 

Custom solutions to reduce operating costs

The power plant managed to reduce its costs by improving the quality and quantity of water produced, enabled by the delivery and installation of new membranes to optimize water filtration in the wastewater reclycling plant.

Technologies guaranteeing the quality of treated water

  • Using smart technology and remote monitoring, the operation and maintenance of facilities are optimized and secure.
  • Monitoring and sampling at the wastewater treatment plant guarantees the extremely high quality of the water delivered to the power plant.
  • The supply of chemicals and chemical control services required to operate the unit are included in the global management package to ensure optimized operation. 
 
These measures enable the power plant to use less fresh water and thereby consume less of the local water resources.
 
The results

Modernization of the facilities and upgrad of the sewerage treatment process to achieve a level of purity

SUEZ modernised the facilities and installed new membranes in the Microfiltration and Reverse Osmosis treatment process to achieve a level of purity that enabled more effective re-use in the demineralisation unit supplying the power plant.
 
The work saved an additional 20 million litres of water per year (250 million vs. 230 million beforehand). 
 
The operation had a threefold positive impact on the environment: firstly by generating savings in drinking water usage, then by recovering household wastewater and sewerage from the local municipality, and thirdly by preventing discharge of the wastewater into the natural environment.

Due to its proximity to an area of beaches and lakes that is home to an abundant population of sea birds and marine life, the plant has to meet particularly strict standards.
