Olfactometry studies UNE-EN 16841

Odor pollution has become one of the most relevant environmental problems in cities and urban environments. In this sense, it is necessary to determine a methodology that allows to measure the environmental impact produced and, likewise, provide criteria to develop the possible corrective measures plan.

Studies based on the European standard UNE-EN 16841

To undertake an environmental impact study for odors, there are two alternatives of action to carry out this type of study. An alternative to the studies based on taking samples in emission (UNE-EN 13725) are the studies carried out from measurements in immission. The European standard that describes this methodology is the UNE-EN 16841 standard.

The Standard describes a methodology capable of valuing the odoriferous impact existing in each area. The method is based on the realization of sensory perceptions through a field panel. This methodology assesses the percentage of occurrence of odoriferous contamination, obtaining the necessary parameters to interpret the data collected during the study. This type of study is recommended in areas where the influence of odoriferous emissions may exist in various facilities or in facilities where diffuse emissions predominate.

Advantages of studies based on immission measures

  • All facilities focus under study are considered, including fugitive sources (difficult to quantify by taking emission samples).
  • Measurement performed directly at immission points (without involved mathematical modeling).
  • Measurement campaigns are carried out for 6 months to 1 year, getting very representative studies.
  • Due to the great temporal information obtained, it is possible to identify episodes where emission peaks takes place.
