SUEZ Environnement wins a 35-year water concession for Tanggu, China

SUEZ Environment, through its joint venture, Sino-French Water Development (SFWD) has been awarded a new water concession in China for the district of Tanggu. The contract represents an annual sales turnover of 15 million Euros for 35 years. The concession will supply of drinking water for the residential quarters of the district and one of the largest ports in the world. Demographic growth in the region and the consequent increase in demand for water should generate estimated sales for the total period of more than one billion Euros.

Tanggu is the fourth* water concession won by SUEZ Environnement in continental China, where the group operates a total of 18 joint ventures. Located in Tianjin, one of the four largest municipalities in China, the contract will supply an estimated population of nearly one million inhabitants.

The demand for water in Tanggu has seen exceptional growth, as industrial activities are increasingly deployed from the Chinese capital towards Tianjin. To face the scale of development, SFWD will optimize the management of the existing facilities, which have a total production capacity of more than 300,000 m3 per day.

With the signature of this contract, SUEZ Environnement confirms its position of market leader in the Republic of China and its status as the principal private operator in delegated water management. The partnership approach of SUEZ Environnement in China makes it an irreplaceable associate for municipalities or developers of industrial parks confronted with increasingly stringent environmental, operational and managerial requirements.

Tanggu is one of 15 Chinese municipalities (including Shanghai, Chongqing and Qingdao) where, through Sino-French Water Development, SUEZ is active providing drinking water for 12 million people. Over 20% of the country's urban population is served by the 140 water treatment plants designed and built throughout the country by Degrémont since the start of the 1970s. SUEZ also provides industrial process water and wastewater management in the biggest industrial parks in Shanghai (Spark and SCIP).

SUEZ ENVIRONMENT, a division of SUEZ, provides equipment and services that protect the environment and deliver the essentials of life. Its activities include drinking water production and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, and waste treatment and recovery. Through its three international brands, Ondeo (water distribution), Degrémont (water treatment plants) and SITA (solid waste management), SUEZ ENVIRONMENT employs over 82,900 people worldwide and in 2003, generated a turnover of 12.3 billion Euros.
