Transversal project 3

Evaluating the Group's environmental impact

Presented by SUEZ

CONTEXT

The application of the 'polluter pays' principle is one of the main objectives of the European Directive which will be transposed into national legislation by the end of 2007. It establishes a common framework of responsibility with a view to preventing and repairing damage to fauna, flora, natural habitats and water resources, or affecting soils. In this context, all SUEZ European companies need to update their knowledge of real or potential environmental risks by making an inventory of their sites.

INNOVATION

LOCAMAPS is a Geographical Information System (GIS) which references SUEZ’s 1,600 industrial locations in Europe, each with a detailed description. This map is updated every month. The tool also maintains a list of protected natural areas (Natura 2000 network and watercourse quality). Cross-referencing these data then allows the environmental impact of the Group’s operations to be evaluated.
LOCAMAPS is a cross-cutting structure that can be used anywhere. It is very easy to update.

RESULTS

Studies are under way to make LOCAMAPS available on the Group’s intranet network. This new structure would allow access by BUs and rapid reporting. In the course of 2007, it is planned to extend the project to the rest of the world. LOCAMAPS provides a certain degree of assurance in case of environmental damage, a new indicator of sustainable development and a differentiating sales factor. It also allows interaction between the various Group business lines.
