Controlling energy demand: Simulating building consumption

Presented by Elyo Cylergie

CONTEXT

One of Elyo’s businesses is operating installations that produce heat or domestic hot water. This activity specifically requires the ability to analyse the consumption of buildings heated in order to estimate potential energy savings. Accordingly, there is a need for performance simulation tools that are accurate, fast and easy to use for account managers as well as sales and technical staff.

INNOVATION

Eval P1 heating is a modelling tool enabling a building’s energy consumption to be determined through a twofold approach: thermal calculations and consumption history as reconstructed by analysing monthly meter readings. By improving the understanding of seasonal consumption, this feature helps optimise heating installations and their operation, and so contributes to better control over energy demand. Compared with its competitors, Eval P1 is also easier to use, because it requires less data entry effort.

RESULTS

Thanks to Eval P1, Elyo can refine the management of its energy sales contracts, while also offering customers new solutions when it comes time to renew contracts. Lastly, it can simulate the performance of a building about which little information is available so that a realistic offer can be produced. As of the end of December 2006, around one hundred users had been trained in using Eval P1. In 2006, 1,000 connections to the programme were recorded, with a total connection time of over 1,700 hours.
