Management project 3

Research and innovation in the water sector

Presented by R i Alliance

CONTEXT

In early 2005, SUEZ associates and subsidiaries in the water services sector formed an alliance to develop research and innovation (R i) projects generating significant added value. This link-up required a re-think of the traditional management structure of research activities at SUEZ Environment.
Accordingly, the new model had to enable different entities to secure and provide R i services in strategic areas of expertise whilst simultaneously factoring in specific national legal and tax considerations.

INNOVATION

This alliance, known as the R i Alliance, is a company established in Paris that arranges R i services for its members through accredited centres. Details of an R i Alliance programme are put forward by a Management Committee in line with the strategic guidelines laid down by Board of Directors. The programme, which is implemented by the various centres, is then monitored by operational experts. This research management model is a first in the private water sector.

RESULTS

R i Alliance currently has five members, four of which are shareholders (Lyonnaise des Eaux, United Water, Aguas de Barcelona and SUEZ Environment) and one partner (Northumbrian Water). More than 35 projects set up in 2005 and 2006 have been completed. The R i Alliance model is fairly generic and is sufficiently well established to be implemented in other business lines within the Group that are looking to build strategic alliances in the field of research and innovation. Moreover, the model also enables outside partner companies to be integrated into the Group and involved in shaping strategy and implementing technical and technology projects within water businesses.
