SUEZ has been a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) since 1999.
The WBCSD brings together some 200 international companies in a shared commitment to sustainable development through economic growth, ecological balance and social progress. WBCSD members are drawn from more than 30 countries and 20 major industrial sectors. The WBCSD also benefits from a global network of 50 national and regional business councils and partner organizations.
The WBCSD’s mission is to provide business leadership as a catalyst for change toward sustainable development, and to support the business license to operate, innovate and grow in a world increasingly shaped by sustainable development issues.
WBCSD Focus Areas
The WBCSD has three Focus Areas, which provide key platforms to discuss strategic priorities related to sustainable development: Energy and Climate, Development, and the Business Role.
Currently, SUEZ is a member of the Energy and Climate, as well as the Business Role working groups:
The Energy and Climate Focus Area aims to devise practical mechanisms, measurement tools, and market based solutions to help companies to reduce the impact of their operations today. It also helps companies prepare for a carbon constrained future by exploring the energy frameworks, sources, and technologies that will be needed tomorrow.
The Business Role Focus Area explores what business can and should do and how business can build trust around its various roles. Its action plan helps member companies respond more effectively and dynamically to society’s expectations.
WBCSD Council Projects
WBCSD Council projects aims to encourage interaction and partnerships between industries along the whole value-chain. WBCSD members choose, initiate and drive the projects through active involvement and cooperation.
SUEZ is currently member of a Council projects entitled “Water and Sustainable Development project”. The project aims to enhance understanding in the business community of critical water issues while actively promoting mutual understanding between business and non-business stakeholders.
Sector projects
SUEZ is member of the WBCSD “Electricity Utilities Member Project”. This project study the challenges that will face an economy that is increasingly reliant on electricity.
It brings together eight leading utilities from around the world to develop a deeper and more concrete understanding of these challenges and explore the business contribution to sustainable solutions.
